Violent Crimes per 10,000 people, 2016

Crime rates can influence the degree to which people participate in their communities. The data shown in this map reflect number of violent crimes per 10,000 people across the entire population (not specifically those with or without disabilities). The U.S. average violent crime rate is 38.8 with a range of 12.4 in Maine to 120.6 in the District of Columbia. Of the cities examined, Detroit, Memphis and Baltimore have the highest violent crime rates, with rates that are over four times the national average. Alternatively, Boise and Honolulu have lower violent crime rates below the national average.

Violent Crimes per 10,000 people Color coded map of the United States.  States have been grouped into four quartile ranges. The first quartile ranges from 12.4 to 25.0 and includes the states Connecticut, Idaho, Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia & Wyoming.  The second quartile ranges from 25.1 to 37.1 and includes the states Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, West Virginia & Wisconsin.  The third quartile ranges from 37.2 to 46.9 and includes the states California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas & United States.  The fourth quartile ranges from 47.0 to 120.6 and includes the states Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Washington DC, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, South Carolina & Tennessee.
