Percentage of SSI for a One-Bedroom Apartment at Fair Market Rent, 2016

We used the Technical Assistance Collaborative, "Priced Out in 2017" data to identify the percent of monthly income from SSI to rent a one-bedroom apartment. Percent of Social Security Income (SSI) for a one-bedroom apartment refers to the percentage of an individual's SSI income that is needed for the monthly cost of a one-bedroom apartment. This measure allows us to see that the percentage of monthly income from SSI for a one-bedroom apartment varies from a low of 75% in Idaho to a high of 206% in DC.

This measure is important because it suggests that in many places, individuals living on SSI struggle to afford housing given that they spend above 30% of their SSI income on housing, a common measure of housing affordability. As a result, many of these individuals may struggle to meet other basic needs.
