Percentage of SSI for an Efficiency Apartment at Fair Market Rent, 2016
We used the Technical Assistance Collaborative, "Priced Out in 2017" data to identify the percent of monthly income from SSI needed to rent an efficiency apartment of people living in the community. Percent of Social Security Income (SSI) for an efficiency apartment refers to the percentage of an individual's SSI income that is needed for the monthly cost of an efficiency apartment. The measure allows us to see that the percentage of monthly income from SSI for an efficiency apartment varies from a low of 64% in Nebraska to a high of 196% in the District of Columbia.
This measure is important because it suggests that in many places, individuals living on SSI struggle to afford housing given that they spend above 30% of their SSI income on housing, a common measure of housing affordability. As a result, many of these individuals may struggle to meet other basic needs.
