Percentage of People with Disabilities Living in Other Group Quarters, 2012 to 16

Other than living in an institution such as a nursing home or at home, individuals with disabilities may also live in residential facilities such as assisted living centers and other group homes. These living arrangements are classified by the US Census Bureau as "other group quarters" and they make up a significant percentage of disabled living arrangements in the nation. Over the 5 years (2012 to 2016), the average percent of people with disabilities living in group quarters ranged from a high of 6.1% (D.C.) to a low of 0.7% (Arkansas).

Percentage of People with Disabilities Living in Other Group Quarters Color coded map of the United States.  States have been grouped into four quartile ranges. The first quartile ranges from 0.7% to 1.1% and includes the states Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia & Wyoming.  The second quartile ranges from 1.2% to 1.4% and includes the states Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah & Virginia.  The third quartile ranges from 1.5% to 2.4% and includes the states Arizona, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, United States & Wisconsin.  The fourth quartile ranges from 2.5% to 6.1% and includes the states Alaska, California, Connecticut, Washington DC, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont & Washington. Calculation. Number of people with a disability living in other group quarters divided by the total number of people with any disability.
Note. Group quarters include: Group homes, college/university student housing, military quarters and other group housing, hostels, shelters, religious group housing, work-related group living arrangements and any other type of group living quarters.
