Percentage of People with Disabilities Living at Home, 2012 to 16

Looking at the percent of people with disabilities living in the home or community, state percentages averaged over the 5 years range from a high of 96.0% (Nevada) to a low of 87.5% (South Dakota). These figures contrast with the previous map (living in an institution), with western and south eastern states such as Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, South Carolina and Alabama having a high percentage of their citizens with disabilities living at home, and with central northern states such as North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota having some of the lowest percentages. State policies such as the availability of personal care services and the provision of optional programs such as Medicaid waivers help people with disabilities in these states to stay at home and out of institutions.
